Meet Ursula one of our BART Heroes pictured with her daughter and read her patient journey.

I started running at age 11 years and I had surgery on my knee when I was 16 as a result of a bad fall in a cross country race. I was told then it could give trouble when I was older but at age 16 I never gave it a second though! I continued a very happy and successful running career including competing in the 1990 Commonwealth Games.  However, that all ended in 2000 with medical advice (and a lot of pain).   I went on to have a full knee replacement in July 2014. I didn’t deliberately set out to resume running, I was happy to be pain free but I did a lot of swimming and gym work and then just started to jog warm ups etc with my group of young athletes and my knee felt amazing. But I never overdo it and I supplement with swimming and strength exercises.  I currently coach endurance athletes at the City of Lisburn AC.  I feel the work BART does is so important and can make the difference in the quality of life people can have post hip/knee surgery.  In 2019 I decided to take part in the Belfast City Marathon and was joined by lots of BART supporters.  It was a great day and I was delighted to be able to raise awareness  and funds for the essential work the team carry out,  improving the lives of those who are having or have had joint replacements.
