Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, along with other Trusts in the wider Health and Social Care system, has published its draft savings plans for 2017/18.  Belfast Trust’s draft savings plans will contribute £23.6m to address the significant financial pressures facing health and social care in 2017/18 and to meet the statutory requirement to break even. The consultation papers are available at  and the Trust has invited service users to give their views and opinions to help shape these proposals. The Trust are hosting 6 public meetings being held across the City during the consultation period which runs from 24 August 2017- 5 October 2017.

Our Patient Liaison Group, funded by BART, whose aims include improving the patient experience, has submitted a response to these proposals.

Every year at Bingham’s Plant Nursery we are pleased to donate 100 hanging baskets -  with 100% of money raised being split between 2 charities.  This year, with the help of Molly Gratton, St.Brigid’s Church of Ireland, Glengormley we raised £1,500  with the money divided equally between The Martin Residential Trust and BART Musgrave Park Hospital.  In addition we were pleased to also donate plants and hanging baskets, towards the fund raising sale and annual sponsored walk organised by BART at Musgrave Park on 11 June 2017– and all being well we can repeat this gesture in 2018 to continue our personal support.  A  ‘thank-you’ to the staff in Orthopaedics at Musgrave – a service my wife had first-hand experience off during her hip replacement in December 2016.

BART supported Mr Iain Dobie, Specialty Doctor at Musgrave Park Hospital,  in attending the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in San Diego in March this year and he sent this report on the conference:

I had not been before and attendance at a large international meeting had been suggested at appraisal as part of continuing professional development.

The meeting itself was excellent and provided many opportunities for continuing professional development and learning.

Firstly it was a large enough meeting to always have something relative to my narrow practice at all times. I attended both the hip and knee afternoons which were particularly informative and relevant to my practice. As these were specific it also went into the finer print of arthroplasty which is not only useful for learning but also for confirmation / validation of current practice.

Secondly the exhibit hall had much more specific equipment relative to my field due to scale and was a valuable resource to browse through in-between lectures.

Lastly like any meeting much of the learning comes from conversations with other surgeons outside the classroom at the meeting. Being such a large meeting there was much opportunity for these discussions.

Our research would not be possible without the important donations we receive throughout the year. So please help us further our work by sending a donation today.
