Mr Paul Magill MCh FRCS Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon

Paul Magill completed his medical degree in Trinity College Dublin in 2003 and continued with surgical training in a number of hospitals in Ireland. He completed his Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery training and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in 2015. Paul then completed two clinical fellowships, both with a focus on hip and knee arthroplasty.

The first of these was in the Primary Joint Unit in Belfast with Professor Beverland. As part of this fellowship he became an integral member of the research team establishing and running a randomised trial on the use of tranexamic acid in primary hip and knee arthroplasty (TRAC-24). His second fellowship was in North Shore Hospital, Auckland, New Zealand where he gained further experience in revision surgery and in computer-assisted surgery. Paul returned to Northern Ireland in 2018 and commenced working in Craigavon Area Hospital as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon. His workload is composed of emergency fracture fixation and elective hip and knee replacement.

Paul is a strong advocate of advances via research. In 2008 he took a year out of clinical practice to investigate the effects of decreased oxygen on lab-grown muscle cells, simulating the conditions during a knee replacement. This work, entitled ‘The effect of ischaemic preconditioning on an in-vitro smooth muscle cell line’ was recognised with a Masters in Surgery degree (MCh) by University College Dublin. Some of his other projects include a 10-year review of the outcomes from the Irish Pelvic and Acetabular trauma centre, the development of a novel spacer to deal with hip infections and a long-term follow-up of 4802 uncemented total hip replacements. He has presented his research studies both nationally and internationally and he has 25 peer-reviewed publications to date.

Paul became a trustee of BART in 2018 and will collaborate with the Primary Joint Unit to develop musculoskeletal research in Craigavon Hospital and the Southern Health Trust.
